EMERSON SEZ: “Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis."

Did you know that three of the top ten novels on Japan's bestsellers list were written on cell phones via text messages by office workers on their daily commutes? Amazing, no?

Devices are monopolizing our communication. Interesting side-note, all of the said novels are about relationships and the desire to meet someone special.

There's something kind of sad about that, but I can't quite verbalize it.

It ties into the script I have written and will be shooting later this month. Having that intermediate technology between you and your intimate partner.

I’m pretty stoked to be directing again – I’m also editing it and playing the lead. I’m not sure if the theme I’ve developed is fully realized in the text, but the fact that I’m thinking about it should hopefully count for something.

I suppose it’s about a need for connection. Which is vague, I know. To specify for your demanding ass: it’s about saying all the things we know we shouldn’t. All the things that people call ‘creepy’. To yell louder. Most of this honesty is delivered over the phone by two characters and when it’s delivered in person it ends horribly.

It’s a happy ending, though, I think. I don’t know – he finds out he’s not the only one who feels that way. That’s a good thing…right?

Maybe these devices aren’t heralding the decline of civility and sincere communication. Maybe they’re the last bastions of freedom, for everyone’s braver behind a mask aren’t they?

Maybe not – let’s start a debate.

In other news I have returned from rehearsal. I am helping out on videotaping a concert for local musician, Danny Davies, tomorrow. He’s also the cat we’re making a music video for after school is finished. I can feel it again – the comfort of dirty hands - with directing and side-projects upon me again I feel the chaos and sleeplessness and mania of being busy and it’s so fucking welcome. I love being busy; I feel as though it puts me through a filter, it refines me. Too much time for reflection is not a good thing.

It’s time again to take these dumb devices and squeeze a little blood out.

Here’s to the unattainable potential. Much Love….
